14.2 is the “magic number”, although that can vary. Also: many cars “do stuff” after you turn the engine off: run the fan, adjust the seats, etc. If a battery is marginal (5 years) it might be discharged by stuff like that, especially in cold weather. When that light comes on, it means the alternator no longer charges. There may be an onboard diagnostic computer that can sense a battery going bad, and in fact a trouble code is set for low voltage, but I’ve never seen a dash light that indicates a bad battery. http://econofix.com/battery.html

It would accept a jump and went another 1K before it happened again. No warning, no engine lights, and the volt meter registered over 13V during driving so the charging system is good. The battery is over 5 years old but always tests with 13+V. I have cleaned the connections. I guess it is time to replace just because of the age.
